Hormozgan: Quake near southern Iran coast kills(5) five


At least five people have been killed and more than 50 injured by a powerful earthquake and aftershocks in Iran's southern province of Hormozgan.

The quake struck at 02:00 local time on Saturday (21:30 GMT Friday) near the coast, 100km (60 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Bandar Abbas.

The victims died in the magnitude-six quake, state media reported, though two aftershocks were equally strong.



A village, Sayeh Khosh, was flattened, local officials said.

"No-one was harmed in the next two severe quakes as people were already outside their homes," said Foad Moradzadeh, governor of Bandar Lengeh, a town near the epicentre.

Rescuers are now providing emergency housing and restoring water and electricity supplies.

Tremors were felt in the United Arab Emirates and other neighboring Gulf states.

Last month at least 1,000 people died in an earthquake in Paktika, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan.

Iran has experienced several devastating earthquakes in recent times, as it sits on major geological fault lines. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake killed more than 30,000 people and ruined the ancient city of Bam.

CHILDREN DISCOVERED IN UNDERGROUND CELL IN ONDO STATE No fewer than 50 children have been rescued from an underground apartment in a church in Ondo town, Ondo state . Defiwjumps.com gathered that the children were abducted and kept in the underground cell. The pastor of the church and other accomplices have been arrested by police detectives in the town in Valentino Area of Ondo. Monkey pox: Nasarawa confirms six cases in two LGAs Nasarawa State has confirmed six cases of monkey pox in two Local government areas. Confirming the outbreak of the disease in Lafia, the state commissioner of health, Ahmed Baba Yahaya  said the first case was reported in Keffi Local government in May this year. Boat mishap in Lagos: 4 bodies recovered Four bodies have been recovered from Friday’s boat mishap at Ojo area of Lagos. The four bodies, part of passengers in a W19 fibre boat carrying 16 passengers were recovered at Mile 2 area on Saturday. The boat capsized on Friday night. HEALTH: Nigeria reports 204 rise suspected cases of Monkeypox in 6 months — NCDC The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has disclosed that between January and June, the country has recorded a total of 204 suspected Monkeypox, MPX, cases out of which  62 cases were confirmed to be positive.
